Two Victorian Hairwork Bracelets with Amethyst in CaseEven in the mid 1800s, the bracelets made of human hair were more expensive than any other pieces of jewelry made in this fashion. At first hairwork jewelry were commissioned pieces and worn as morning jewelry; however, it took on such popularity that it became the drawing room pastime. The most commonly made were the Fob chains, and rarest were the bracelets. The fittings on this pair of bracelets are rolled-gold over what looks to be silver. Having a safety chain, they open with a front clasp that houses a cut glass or Amethyst (my gem tester can't make up its mind if its glass or stone, but when these pieces had this type of addition they were generally stone). The fine brown woven hair is in very good overall condition with some normal fraying at the edges. It is extremely rare to find two of these lovely bracelets as a set. The back of one of the bracelets is monogrammed Anna H Mann and the second bracelet, with a little smaller back clasp, is monogrammed E.F.Mann. No doubt made for sisters or mother and daughter. The Victorian leather storage box is original to the set, another unique find, and will be included with the set. Book value $2200.
